Heartburn

HeartburnHeartburn is thought to be an early indication of the stress that the heart has to cope with. It is reported that low amounts of hydrochloric acid in the stomach may stop proteins from being broken down, which may result in a burning sensation and fullness. This usually occurs after a big meal. It has been suggested that eating prior to going to bed might place extra pressure on the digestive system.

Indigestion
Thought to be caused by a lack of stomach acids and enzymes, the signs of indigestion are reported to include feeling a burning sensation, or a sour fluid, in the throat, suffering from sickness or vomiting and abdominal pains.
It has been said that individuals suffering from indigestion should eat very little, and, to minimise the production of stomach acid, stay clear of alcohol and caffeine, as this may place stress on to the body.
It is said that a digestive enzyme supplement might be helpful in alleviating this problem, and that drinking camomile or ginger tea will also promote digestion, with ginger said to be particularly good as it is believed to relieve inflammation within the digestive tract. It is said that high levels of stress may result in stomach aches and camomile, green and mint teas are all reported to reduce tension and anxiety. It is also said to be vital to take extra minerals if acidity in the stomach is low.
It has been said that Indigestion and reflux may usually be remedied without recourse to medication with dietary switches reported to help in improving the digestive function and reducing digestive discomfort.

In order to combat indigestion and reflux it has been recommended to:
- Chew food in a slow and proper manner while eating as it is said chewing mixes food with saliva, which features an enzyme called amylase. Amylase begins the digestion of starchy foods such as pasta, white rice and white bread. Chewing is also thought to break up food, which expands the surface section that is exposed to acid and digestive enzymes.
- It has been said to be better to eat small regular meals as opposed to eating large meals, as they relax the burden on the digestive system and lower the risk of indigestion occurring.
- Drinking while having a meal has been said to be avoided as it dilutes the digestive secretions which break food down, which may then disrupt digestion. It has been said that drinking should really be done in between meals.
- Digestion is said to be easier if foods are mixed together correctly.

Supplements that are reported help in treating indigestion
- Taking the rice bran oil extract, Gamma- oryzanol, is thought to be highly affective for the central nervous system's control of digestion and to help in enhancing the digestive procedure.
- Calcium carbonate supplements are said to be useful for occasional reflux.
- To soothe an irritated oesophagus, Aloe Vera juice has been advised on many occasions.
