Diarrhea
Reported to mean having more regular and runnier stools than normal, most attacks of diarrhea are viewed as occurring due to viral infection which is transferred from one individual to another in the air or by close contact. The infection might result in vomiting, and then the diarrhea may pass down through to the gut. It may result in suffering from abdominal cramps.
The usual causes of diarrhea are thought to be stomach bugs, Irritable bowel syndrome, food poisoning, constipation, food intolerances and bowel cancer.
It has been thought that diarrhea may be prevented in a number of ways:
- Consuming plenty of water during the day.
- Avoiding dairy products as they are reported to exacerbate diarrhea.
- It has been recommended to eat regular small amounts of easily digestible food.
Supplements believed to treat diarrhoea
- Agrimory tea and blackberry leaf tea are reported to be helpful for treating diarrhea, as they feature tannins, which, it is said, have a sealing effect on the mucous membranes in the intestine and are seen as beneficial for the body in retaining fluids. These teas also replenish lost fluids.
- Psyllium is viewed as good as it aids the absorption of excess fluid in the intestine and adds bulk to the stool.
- Probiotics are said to feature beneficial bacteria, which is required for the intestine and are believed to be essential if the diarrhea is related to antibiotic use.
Flatulence
Flatulence is said to be stimulated by excess gas building up in the digestive tract and is then expelled via the rectum. A well known cause of flatulence is believed to be the chemical reactions arising after eating certain foods. Foods that feature complex carbohydrates such as onions and beans may result in flatulence, as they are not fully digested in the stomach and the small intestine. Wind and bloating may be resulted by the consumption of dairy products, such as milk.
The signs of flatulence are thought to include the regular emission of wind through the rectum and suffering from stomach discomfort and bloating. Various situations have been reported to result in flatulence, such as suffering from celiac disease, stress-related illnesses and indigestion of foods.
In order to combat flatulence it has been suggested to avoid fizzy drinks and to chew food in a proper manner, because large lumps of food may result in wind as they pass into the large intestine without being totally digested. Thus it has been advised to eat more slowly, because eating at a fast rate is said to mean swallowing more air.
Supplements that have been reported to be beneficial if suffering with Flatulence
- Ginger is said to be an excellent digestive aid, as it soothes the digestive tract and is seen as helpful for helping to relieve flatulence.
- The herbs Caraway seed, Fennel, peppermint and Ainseed, contain carminative properties, which are reported to improve the co-ordination of the digestive process.
- Taking the supplements, Wormwood and Gentian, is said to encourage the secretion of digestive juices.
- Probiotic supplements are seen as useful as they feature friendly bacteria that are reported to inhabit the large intestine and help combat the growth of gas producing bacteria.
- FOS supplements are said to be useful as they also feature friendly bacteria, which may help to relieve wind and bloating.
