Constipation

ConstipationConstipation is commonly caused by a diet that dos not feature high mounts of fibre and fluids, although it may be related by an inadequate liver function. This is because bile salts that are created in the liver are natural laxatives, and they are said to be vital for promoting the function of the digestive system. Other causes of constipation are said to include a lack of sporting activity, suffering from depression and health related disorders such as suffering from colon cancer, diabetes or an under active thyroid.
The signs of constipation may include infrequency of bowel movements, hard and dry stools and the swelling of the abdomen.
It has been recommended to consume foods that are high in fiber such as fresh fruits and vegetables, wholegrains and pulses to help combat constipation.

- Dandelion root may be consumed as a tea, its mild laxative features are reported to act gently on the bowel.
- The supplement Cascara sagrada is a powerful laxative, which, it is believed, stimulates the bowel muscles to contract.
- Psyllium supplements are said to be excellent as they provide fiber.
